1) In a large skillet, brown the hot Italian sausage and lean ground beef over medium heat. Drain fat and set aside.
2) In a large skillet, sauté 2 tablespoons of olive oil, garlic, hot red pepper flakes, and diced onions.
3) In a separate large skillet, sauté in 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 large diced green pepper.
4) In a large sauce pot, add plum tomatoes, browned sausage and beef mixture, the sautéed onions, garlic, and red pepper mixture, and the sautéed green pepper. Begin to simmer.
5) Add red wine, bay leaf, salt and pepperto taste, Italian seasoning, tomato paste, basil, and oregano.
6) Simmer for 3 to 4 hours stirring occasionally.
